40+ Bizarre and Inappropriate Things Famous People Did for the Sake of Method Acting

Facebook // Virginia Martins

Method acting has become a hot topic in Hollywood but it’s not for everyone. Method actors completely immerse themselves into the character they’re playing and live as that person – even when the camera’s off. The concept is highly controversial, as it’s been said that it can mess with a person’s psyche and the dynamics of their life. For example, these 40+ actors who took method acting a step too far…

Morbius

The movie Morbius is about a man with a rare blood disease who, in an attempt to find a cure, accidentally turns himself into a vampire. Jared Leto plays the main character, who uses crutches to get around.

Unfortunately, the movie had quite low ratings, despite the fact that Jared was dedicated enough to use method acting to prepare. Sadly, it seems that not only did Leto’s efforts not pay off but he got on production’s bad side as well.

Jared Leto

Jared Leto insisted on acting fully disabled, just as his character is, throughout filming. He used crutches to get around the set — even to the bathroom, which ended up slowing production down. It would take Jared a whopping 20 minutes to go to the bathroom and back on crutches.

Eventually, the director had to convince Leto to be taken to the restroom via wheelchair instead. That being said, Jared is notorious for his method acting, so it’s not like the director didn’t know what he was getting.

Ray

The biopic Ray is often credited with being the movie that made Hollywood take Jamie Foxx seriously as a dramatic actor. Jamie played Ray Charles, a blind musician, and told the story of his life.

The movie got rave reviews and Foxx’s portrayal earned him an Oscar. Although it all seems to have been worth it, Jamie didn’t exactly have an easy time playing a blind man when he, himself, can see. To be fair, though, all of Foxx’s hardships were of his own making.

Jamie Foxx

In order to better understand Ray’s life as a blind man, Jamie Foxx wore prosthetics on his eyelids that made him unable to see. The actor was temporarily blinded for roughly 14 hours a day! Jamie called the experience “unsettling” and “claustrophobic.”

It was so bad that Foxx had several panic attacks on set. Interestingly, Jamie’s colleagues often forgot that he couldn’t see, which makes sense since he’s normally sighted. They’d accidentally leave him at the lunch table, or elsewhere on set, with the assumption that he could get back independently.
